made.
Two ideas. One very unexpected story.
Hi, I'm Tayla.
THIS WAS NEVER REALLY THE PLAN.
Tayla Made It is what happened when creativity became necessity. What started as two completely separate ideas, one from a love of food and another from needing to make a Mother's Day gift with almost no money, eventually became one creative world built around making ordinary things feel considered, beautiful and special.
SOME THINGS START BECAUSE YOU HAVE TIME. THIS STARTED BECAUSE I HAD A LOT OF IT.
First, I made food.
Tayla Made Food began during a long period of unemployment. With more uncertainty than direction, cooking and creating became somewhere to place my energy, and eventually blossomed into something much bigger.
I used the final salary from my previous job to buy equipment, ingredients and a small collection of props, then taught myself the foundations of food photography through YouTube tutorials. Armed with nothing more than my cellphone, I started shooting, and I haven’t stopped since.
The page had just begun gaining momentum when COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill. During lockdown, my mother and I were in Johannesburg caring for my uncle, who was ill at the time. I cooked almost every day, photographing each recipe on my phone against broken tiles I had turned into makeshift backdrops.
In a season defined by uncertainty and fragile mental health, creating gave me something steady. It gave my days structure, kept my imagination moving and allowed Tayla Made Food to continue growing when almost everything else had paused.
To date, every photograph featured on Tayla Made Food has been taken on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, styled and photographed in my parents’ lounge using two pieces of polystyrene as styling boards. No studio. No professional camera. Just resourcefulness, patience and an obsession with getting every detail right.
I have always believed that people eat with their eyes first. That belief shaped my approach to food: it had to be genuinely delicious, beautiful enough to spark an appetite and approachable enough for someone to recreate in their own kitchen.
What began as a creative outlet during unemployment has since grown into a platform for recipes, food photography and collaborations with food, drink and lifestyle brand, but the philosophy remains the same: good food should taste incredible, look irresistible and still feel possible.
PEOPLE EAT WITH THEIR EYES FIRST.
SO I DECIDED THE FOOD SHOULD LOOK AS GOOD AS IT TASTES.
THE CANDLE STORY
THEN 2020 HAPPENED.
Tayla Made Melts began during the COVID-19 pandemic when salaries had been halted.
I wanted to give my mom something meaningful for Mother's Day but had very little money, so I got creative.
What started as a homemade gift eventually became Tayla Made Melts.
IT WAS NEVER JUST ABOUT THE CANDLE.
AFFORDABLE WELLNESS
Beautiful products should not feel inaccessible.
THE DETAILS MATTER
From the label to the scent, matches, candle care and packaging.
GIFT ENERGY
Every order should feel considered before the candle is even lit.
FOOD ON ONE SIDE. CANDLES ON THE OTHER.
TAYLA MADE IT IN THE MIDDLE.
One starts with ingredients. The other starts with wax. But the thinking has always been the same: take something simple, give it care, make it beautiful and make the person receiving it feel something.
THEN → NOW
FOOD
An unemployment-era creative outlet becomes Tayla Made Food. This was the first recipe I shot - tomato soup.
MOTHER'S DAY
Kitchen glasses, loadshedding candles and garden flowers become the first candles. This was the first candle I've ever poured. I started selling candles via a Google form and manual order confirmations that I'd make via Canva.
TAYLA MADE MELTS
A handmade gift becomes a candle business. I officially registered the company here and started refining the brand. We moved from consol jars to the iconic whiskey tumbler we use now. I sold the candles at my first market and produced my first bulk order for Mama Money.
TAYLA MADE IT
Food, candles, collaborations and creativity become one brand. I have found a home for both my businesses and want to use this platorm to document the growth and encourage people to START.
